Sonia Marpez (Galicia, Spain, 1987) is photographer and student of art history. She has collaborated in different art projects and has been in charge of diverse editorial and poster projects, beside being coauthor of some blogs.

Hi Sonia! How did you come to photography?

When I was a teenager I took shelter behind the camera.

Are there photographers who influenced you?

In the beginning, artist like Robert Bresson and Larry Clark showed me that reality is full of beauty. But actually my work has been influenced more by personal experiences; besides that, film and music have been the arts that have inspired me most.

You usually choose black and white tones for your works. Why?

I started doing color photography, but I began to see the world from another perspective, perhaps more sadly; the black and white photography was better to tell how I was feeling.

Your photographs remind me of Surrealism; a lemon slice in a pocket watch, some door handles in the sand… Is there any link with that art movement?

Maybe, after all, on many occasions I seek an approach to the subconscious.

Analogue or digital?

Digital, although I have little affairs with analog photography, when my pocket permits.

Some pictures of yours show a little human being, closed in a glass bottle. What is their meaning?

Loneliness, solitude, melancholy (and the infinite sadness), isolation, alienation, the impossibility of real communication…

Are you interested in other forms of art, for example painting or writing? Do they influence your photographs?

Yes, when I was a little girl I enjoyed very much drawing, now I still like it but I’m not very good at it. With writing I have a little stormy relationship, I quite like it but we fight a lot.

Do you have a favourite subject? Why?

I guess the melancholy, everyone says that my photographs transmit it.

You live in Spain. What do you think about the photographic field in your country? And in Europe? Would you like to move to another country to improve?

I think there are very good people to discover. Regarding move to another country, I think about it constantly, especially for economic issues; if the country continues longer without providing opportunities for young people I will have to emigrate.

What are your goals for the future?

Right now to get a job, perhaps then I’d can fantasize about the future.

Ciao Sonia! Come sei arrivata alla fotografia?

Quand’ero adolescente ho trovato riparo dietro la fotocamera.

Ci sono fotografi che ti hanno influenzato?

All’inizio, artisti come Robert Bresson e Larry Clark mi hanno mostrato che la realtà è piena di bellezza. Ma in verità, il mio lavoro è stato influenzato di più dalle mie esperienze personali; oltre a quelle, i film e la musica sono state le arti che mi hanno ispirato maggiormente.

Di solito utilizzi tonalità in bianco e nero per i tuoi lavori. Perché?

Ho iniziato facendo fotografie a colori, ma ho preso a vedere il mondo da un’altra prospettiva, forse in maniera più triste: la fotografia in bianco e nero era il modo migliore per comunicare cosa stavo provando.

Le tue fotografie mi ricordano il Surrealismo: una fetta di limone inserita in un orologio da taschino, alcune maniglie nella sabbia… C’è qualche collegamento con quel movimento artistico?

Forse, dopo tutto, in molte occasioni cerco un approccio con il subconscio.

Analogico o digitale?

Digitale, sebbene abbia qualche volta a che fare con la fotografia analogica, quando le mie tasche me lo consentono.

Alcune tue foto mostrano un piccolo essere umano, chiuso in una bottiglia di vetro. Qual è il loro significato?

Isolamento, solitudine, malinconia (e la tristezza infinita), separazione, alienazione, l’impossibilità di una comunicazione reale…

Sei interessata ad altre forme d’arte, per esempio dipingere o scrivere? Influenzano la tua fotografia?

Sì, quand’ero una bambina mi piaceva moltissimo disegnare, ora mi piace ancora ma non sono molto portata. Con la scrittura ho una breve relazione tormentata, mi piace abbastanza ma bisticciamo un sacco.

Hai un soggetto preferito? Perché?

Credo la malinconia, tutti dicono che le mie fotografie la trasmettono.

Vivi in Spagna. Cosa pensi della scena fotografica del tuo paese? E in Europa? Ti piacerebbe spostarti in un altro paese per migliorare?

Penso che ci siano molte persone valide da scoprire. Riguardo lo spostarsi in un altro paese, ci rifletto di continuo, in particolar modo per motivi economici: se il paese persevera nel non fornire opportunità ai giovani, dovrò emigrare.

Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi per il futuro?

In questo momento, trovare un lavoro, forse poi potrò fantasticare sul mio avvenire.
